Understanding the Smart Fume Hood

Smart Fume is a revolutionary concept that has been developed to make central heating more efficient.smart fume hood Gone is the bulky manual airflow gauge, replaced by an instant air gauge and an optional remote control device that can be added to the existing system. The only obvious advantages are the overall cost saving and the elimination of ducting requirement. With no external ductwork required and the substantial savings this brings in terms of running costs, the new SMART fuming cabinets generally cost less than a hundred Euros to run each year, and taking into consideration the replacement filter there are huge savings over the lifetime of the appliance.

One major disadvantage of these ductless smart fume hoods is the lack of flexibility. The existing duct work has to be adapted to the installation of this new filter. Usually this can be done rather easily, by drilling straight through the roof joists where the attachment is to be fitted. But it is also possible to make alterations to the existing system by drilling new holes into the ceiling or wall (after taking out the ceiling insulation first) and then replacing the existing system with a ductless smart fume hood. Again this is perfectly acceptable if the design of your house is to follow the norm of the current "crib" designs in many homes today.

Another important disadvantage of ductless smart fume hoods is their inability to cope with high temperature conditions in the laboratory. At times it can be quite difficult to maintain the proper indoor temperature conditions in the winter months when research is usually carried out. It can even be quite dangerous in some cases to have such a unit in close proximity to any area of the laboratory in order to prevent the build up of condensation which can result in a very hazardous situation for those working in the laboratory. This is not so much an issue in houses with built-in air conditioning systems, but in those without this additional equipment.

In addition to these two disadvantages, there is another one that should be mentioned. These ductless units can only be installed where a venting system is already present. So the installation of the new smart filter saturation fume hood will have to be accompanied by the fitting of a venting system, either ducted or otherwise. Installation of the former can often be achieved simply enough by drilling a few vent holes into the ceiling and wall at the point where the attachment is to be fitted. Of course in this case the installation of the latter will also have to be accompanied by a plumbing work.

Some of these ductless fume hoods are also fitted with a pre-installed electronic circuit, which helps to automatically switch on the ventilation system. This has its advantages and disadvantages as explained above. However, these types of electronic circuit systems are rapidly being replaced by more sophisticated ones whose operation can be activated by a touch or a click from within the vicinity of the fume hood enclosure. These types of electronic circuit are generally very simple and are based on transistors and diodes which are fitted within the housing itself, without the need for a duct.

Electronic circuit systems based on mole codes are also available for the smart ductless fume hoods. Mole code systems are based on the premise that there exists some sort of magnetic field around the house. As long as this field remains intact, the electrical supply inside the enclosure remains intact. The mole code is normally a small magnetic field, which can be detected by the meter reader in the bathroom or kitchen. The circuit, once activated, does not shut down until the magnetic field is detected again by the reader. Therefore, this type of system is less expensive than the electrical one.
